Participatory Recovery Group for Unlearning Pain & Fatigue

Limited to just five members, the Participatory Recovery Group for Unlearning Pain & Fatigue will meet live on Zoom for 75-minute sessions each Saturday for eight weeks starting July 19, 2025. Meetings will blend a concise psycho-educational lesson, guided somatic-tracking, fear-reduction, real-time emotional processing, and collaborative skills practice designed to retrain the brain’s danger circuits and restore a sense of bodily safety. The experiential curriculum draws on evidence-based modalities—including Pain Reprocessing Therapy, Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy—in which I have formal training.

Mindfulness and writing practices are woven throughout the sessions to help participants cultivate self-compassion and intercept pain-fear spirals. By program’s end, members will have practiced assertive communication, explored layered emotions, and begun to craft a resilient recovery identity within a supportive group context.

Participatory group process means that you will be asked to take part in a co-teaching/co-learning dynamic where you will be tasked with teaching one of the five-minute lessons to the other participants. Each member will also take turns as an empathic listener, helping facilitate emotional awareness and expression in Zoom breakout rooms. (You can get a sense of how this works in a film I directed called This Might Hurt.)

Time Commitment: Between sessions, each member is asked to spend one hour on homework, including assigned readings, meditations, or writings. This makes for a cumulative 2.25 hours per week of commitment for eight weeks (18 hours total).

Prerequisites for joining the group are: (1) 2 50-minute assessment sessions with Kent. (2) Showing up with a personalized, one-page evidence sheet for neuroplastic qualities of your symptoms—these sheets will help shift the perceived meanings of body sensations and bring a greater sense of safety.

GROUND RULES FOR GROUP MEMBERS

Arrive punctually, be in the Zoom fully without distractions (devices set to "do not disturb") and remain for the entire session. Attend every session as absences for intensive groups can cause undue disruption for others.

Respect people’s confidentiality, as they will be sharing sensitive material from their lives. What’s shared in the group stays in the group. It is okay to share about your own growth outside the group.

Be mindful not to take up more than your fair share of time, allowing space for quieter members to step forward and be heard.

Do your homework between sessions and try to bring significant issues each week that will move you forward on your journey toward recovery. Be willing to dig deep and trust the group.

Avoid giving advice to other group members. But feel free to offer appreciation, caring, support, or personal reflections about how you have been supported by others.

Be curious and open-minded. Come willing to learn about yourself. Some exercises may feel unusual – like writing unsent letters to someone who hurt you, doing guided meditations, or focusing on bodily sensations. Give new techniques a try, even if they feel a bit awkward at first.
